Caroline Zak, Class of 2011
Major: Social Studies Education
Hometown: Westford, MA
"I've always wanted to be a teacher—it was just a matter of finding what grade and subject," Caroline says. "History has always fascinated me." She's visited historical sites around the country with her father, who is in the military, sparking an interest in American history.
Her favorite class at Rivier so far has been The Historian's Tools, which shows students how to conduct historical research, survey literature, and prepare essays for publication. Caroline says the course helped her learn how to distinguish accurate historical facts from statements that aren't true. "It covers all the things you hope you'd learn (about research) all in one class," she says.
Caroline praises Rivier's faculty. "I like the teachers—they make classes fun even though there's a lot of work. The teachers are always open to what you have to say—they really listen." Students can get personal attention from faculty that they may not get at a larger school, she says. "I like how you can walk everywhere on campus. Everyone's really nice, friendly. I fit in well," she says.
Caroline's classroom observations as part of her education coursework have been a good fit as well. She's observed a social studies class studying Greece at Nashua's Elm Street Junior High. "It was interesting to see the types of students that go there," she says. She's also spent time in a special education class at Campbell High School in Litchfield, N.H."The teachers were helpful; they would give me hints and tips. I felt included there," she says.
