The Art Gallery at Rivier University is hosting an exhibition of The Woods Wrap Around Us: Monoprints and Encaustic Paintings by Loretta CR Hubley. The collection will be on display from September 26 – November 3. A Nashua resident, Hubley’s recent work is inspired by her cherished walks in the woods. Rich in color, texture, intricate detail, and attention to scale, it conveys appreciation for both the dynamic and the subtle movements of nature as it negotiates the passing seasons.

An award-winning artist, Hubley holds a master’s degree in Fine Art and Art Education from the University of Maryland at College Park. She has engaged in extensive museum study and archaeological travel in America, Europe, Africa, and the Near and Far East. She has participated in numerous exhibitions, including venues in the United States and Scotland, and shares that her creative purpose is “to find and reveal the power and mystery of the life force.”

Sr. Theresa Couture, Gallery Director, observes that “the vibrancy of Loretta’s work suggests that the artist never seems to tire of the forest because—much like the seashore—it is never the same twice. Weather conditions alter its physical character, constantly providing new and even surprising things to contemplate and interpret. Loretta’s prints and paintings reveal a sensitivity to poetic ambiguity, mindful shifts of vantage points, and the transforming effects of discovery.”

Hubley has served the art community as president of the Nashua Art Association and founding member of the Women’s Caucus for Art – New Hampshire Chapter. Formerly an instructor at colleges and universities in Maryland, Michigan, and New Hampshire, including Rivier University, she currently offers mentoring sessions for individuals and small groups at her private studio.

The Woods Wrap Around Us will be on exhibition at Rivier University through November 3. It is accompanied by music for piano composed, performed, and recorded by Peri Strongwater in response to the works on exhibition.

An open reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, October 1, from 1 to 3 p.m.
