Children Visiting Campus Libraries
The University Libraries' collections and services are not designed to meet the needs of younger students or children. With particular regard to the safety of children in the libraries and the potential impact of their presence on other library users, the following policy applies.
Regina Library offers an adult, unsupervised environment for the purpose of academic research and support of the University’s curriculum.
Children Under 14
- Within the libraries, there are areas which are potentially hazardous. Caretakers (a responsible adult who is 18 years of age or older) are ultimately responsible for the safety and welfare of children in their care.
- Children under the age of 14 are permitted in the libraries provided that their purpose and behavior is appropriate for an academic library. Caretakers must be in the same immediate area as their children and monitor their behavior at all times. Caretakers may not bring children and leave them unattended in the building. Caretakers must be aware of nearby persons who are studying and who may be disturbed by the activity and sound of children.
- Library staff cannot assist in supervising the actions of children in the libraries. If a child is observed unaccompanied or is in violation of any library policies, staff will make a reasonable attempt to inform the caretaker. If a child under 14 is left unaccompanied in the library, staff will immediately notify the Department of Public Safety. At any time, at the discretion of the librarian in charge, a child or children or caretaker(s) may be asked to leave the premises.
Nashua Public and Private High School Students
- Nashua public and private high school students may use the libraries on their own. Initially, a parent or caretaker needs to sign a Parent Consent Form and the student must read and sign a Computer Use Policy form. Both forms will be kept on file in the library.
- Library staff are not responsible for supervising teenagers in the libraries. As with other library users, teenagers must adhere to library policies as stated. Infractions may result in a request to leave the library. If a teenager is in the library at closing time or in the event of an emergency situation, staff will immediately notify the Department of Public Safety.
